Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a beautiful and historic place located in Bhaktapur, about 13 km from Kathmandu, Nepal. It was once the royal palace of the Bhaktapur Kingdom and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square is full of temples, courtyards, and traditional buildings that show the rich culture of the Newar people.

One of the main attractions is the 55-Window Palace, which has amazing wood carvings. Nearby is the Golden Gate, a stunning entrance decorated with gold and fine artwork. Another famous spot is the Nyatapola Temple, the tallest pagoda-style temple in Nepal. It is five stories high and shows the skill of Newari architecture.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is not just about old buildings. It is still full of life. Local people come here to pray, shop, and celebrate festivals. During events like Bisket Jatra, the square becomes very lively with music, dances, and traditional chariot processions.

You can also visit Pottery Square, where you can see people making clay pots by hand. It’s a great place to learn about local crafts and even try making pottery yourself.

If you love photography, Bhaktapur is perfect. The narrow streets, red brick buildings, and temples offer beautiful views, especially in the early morning or evening light.

 Danger !!
  • Slippery or Uneven Paths: The old brick walkways and stone steps can be slippery or uneven. Wear comfortable shoes and watch your step.
  • Festival Crowds: During festivals like Bisket Jatra, the square becomes very crowded. Stay alert and avoid pushing through dense crowds.
  • Fake Guides: Some people may offer tours without a license and demand high fees. Only hire official guides from the ticket counter or visitor center.
  • Restricted Temple Areas: Some temples are only for Hindus. Entering these areas without permission is disrespectful.
  • Air Pollution/Dust: On dry days, dust can be a problem—wear a mask if you’re sensitive.
 Warning !!
  • Earthquake-Damaged Areas: Some temples or buildings may still be under repair from the 2015 earthquake. Do not enter fenced-off or unstable areas.
  • Falling Debris During Construction: If construction is happening nearby, stay clear of scaffolding and warning zones.
